SMU head football coach Phil Bennett held his weekly press conference Tuesday at Gerald J. Ford Stadium as the Mustangs prepare to travel to Houston, Texas on Saturday to take on conference opponent Rice. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
Bennett discussed last week's come from behind win over Tulsa and Saturday's crucial contest against the Owls. The winner of Saturday's game will pick-up their seventh win of the season and will clinch a bowl spot for the year.
Phil Bennett Press Conference - Nov. 21, 2006 - Rice Week
On the impact of possibly making a bowl...
"It would validate what we've been trying to do here. We've won nine of our last 14 games and have made strides. I can see some positives - some things that bode well for the future - but a bowl would be a nice stepping stone and we need to get there."
On Rice's QB...
"I'm not sure who they'll play but I hope their kid is healthy. Chase is a great competitor and was having a great year. I don't have any control over who plays. All I can do is get our team ready for what they do. Whoever plays, plays."
On Rice WR Jarrett Dillard...
"He has great instincts and can really jump for the ball. He's a very explosive player and we just have to try and keep him in front of us."
On SMU QB Justin Willis...
"It all starts with the quarterback and he's given us something. Jerad Romo did that the last four games of last season, and after two games to get settled in, Justin has done that this season. He does what a lot of great quarterbacks do - wait, I'm not going to say great yet. If we win Saturday, then I'll anoint him. I still think he can get a lot better."
