WAYZATA, Minn. (SMU) - SMU senior Colt Knost won medalist honors for the second time in two tournaments this season, tying Zack Miller of Stanford at 2-under-par 214 for first place at the second-annual Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club.
Despite windy and cold conditions, the Pilot Point, Texas, native tied for the victory, making up one shot on the tournament's final hole. After shooting a tournament-low 67 in round two, Knost shot a final-round 76 including a par on No. 18, while Stanford's Miller posted bogey 5 on the final hole.
As a team, SMU was third at 896, trailing only winner Stanford (889) and host Minnesota (894). The Mustangs finished ahead of a slew of national powers including Michigan State, Indiana, Northwestern, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia Southern.
Also posting a great tournament for SMU was Brandon DeStefano, who tied for fifth at 220 after shooting rounds of 72, 74 and 74. Scott Sikes (79-77-76) and James Minahan (76-78-78) tied for 34th, while Arwed Fischer's final-round 87 saw him slip to a 57th-place tie at 242.
