SMU Football Head Coach Phil Bennett hosted his weekly press conference on Tuesday in advance of Saturday's SMU-Southern Miss C-USA matchup. Below are some excerpts:
On the overtime loss to UTEP...
"It was a tough loss. It was tough on the players. It was tough on the coaches. The last two weeks have been challenging, (but) I think this team has the right attitude. They came out and they worked last week."
On the open week...
"During our open week, as you might well suspect, we spent a lot of time on fundamentals - tackling on defense, alignment, coverage. We tried some different people at inside linebacker. We're not totally set yet who those people are going to be, but we've got Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We will make an evaluation today and then settle on it on Wednesday and Thursday."
On the game vs. Southern Miss...
"Our clock is ticking. We've got to get consistent and get consistent in a hurry. We've got a challenge, going to Southern Miss. One of the guys asked me yesterday on the teleconference, 'How does it feel to play Southern Miss? You know they're going to be mad. You know they're going to be angry. They lost to Boise, they didn't play well against Rice.' Well, that's a two-way street. We haven't played to our capabilities, either. And, I was laughing. We're going to be there. We're coming anyway, whether they are mad or not."
On Southern Miss...
"They're a talented team. I don't think anybody would deny that. Right now, they've been bitten by turnovers on offense, (but) they have the No. 1 defense in the conference right now. They're talented, very athletic and we're fixing to face a challenge."
