DALLAS (SMU) - The NCAA has approved a waiver request that will allow SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini, Executive Assistant Athletics Director Mike Vaught and Director of Football Operations Randy Ross to communicate with prospects Nov. 2-10 as part of the recruitment process.
Jeff Konya, SMU's Associate AD for Compliance/Student Affairs and the person who prepared the waiver, said, "This ruling will allow these SMU individuals to initiate phone calls and send written recruiting correspondence to prospects within this narrow time frame. I am sure it will assist the recruiting process, as it provides an avenue to get critical information to these prospects with respect to the change in football leadership."
Under traditional NCAA rules, only the formal members of the coaching staff are permitted to communicate for recruitment purposes with the prospects in such a fashion.
Orsini summed up the waiver, saying, "This NCAA waiver will simply allow us to remain in contact with prospective student-athletes and their families and to share with them our commitment to building a winning football program at SMU."
