DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team was edged by No. 22 Tulsa this afternoon, 4-1, at the Lakewood Country Club in Dallas. Adolfo Solares notched a singles win at the No. 6 spot. Tulsa's No. 22 ranking matches the highest ranking the Hurricane men have ever attained.
The Mustangs battled through the doubles competition but were unable to come out with the point. Robin Fahgen and Oivind Alver were not able to power past Arnau Brugues and Will Gray at the No. 3 spot as they fell, 8-5. Tulsa clinched the doubles point as Andy Connelly and Lucques Maasdorp of Tulsa narrowly defeated David Kuczer and Adolfo Solares, 8-6, at the No. 2 slot. A hot competition was going on at No. 1 singles between Alex Skrypko and Federico Murgier and Tulsa's duo of Diego Camacho and Ross Cunningham who are nationally-ranked at No. 41 but the match was called as the Mustangs held the one point advantage, 8-7.
In singles action, Skrypko faced tough competition at the No. 1 spot against Burgues, the No. 5 singles in the nation. Skrypko was unable to power past him as Skrypko fell, 6-4, 6-2. Fahgen competed against Camacho at No. 5 singles but was not able to take the win as he fell, 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after the conclusion of No. 5 singles, Solares notched a Mustang point at the No. 6 slot in the line-up with a, 6-4, 6-3, win over Olof Sjolund. Alver had a tough fight at No. 4 singles against Cunningham as he fell, 6-3, 7-6. The match was called before the other two singles were completed. At No. 2 singles, Kuczer dropped the first set to Soriano but was making a comeback in the second set as the score was tied at five. At No. 3 singles, Murgier also dropped the first set but was dominating in the second set.
The Mustangs will face Columbia in a noon match on Tues., March 13 at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.
