PINEHURST, N.C. (SMU) - Two-time defending champion and SMU standout Colt Knost came up two shots short in his attempt to win his third straight Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Tuesday, carding an even-par 72 over the final 18 to finish at 1-under 215. Jorge Campillo of Indiana won the tournament at 3-under, while Knost tied for second.
As a team, the Mustangs tied for fifth at 895 at The Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8 after its other four golfers had tough final rounds. SMU, which had won the event two straight years, carded a final round 303 and finished 15 strokes back of champion Indiana.
Scott Barton (71-77-77-225-T25), Brandon DeStefano (76-77-77-230-T47) and Frank Wrenn (78-75-77-230-T47) all shot 77s on Tuesday, while Scott Sikes (75-75-78-228-T38) carded a 78. Ben Tewes, playing as in individual, finished tied for 70th at 78-76-81-235.
