DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team battled with No.21 VCU this morning at the Gleneagles Country Club in Dallas. The Mustangs were edged by VCU, 4-1.
David Kuczer and Chris Hooshyar finished their match a No. 2 doubles first as they were not able to upend Emil Lindgren and Sebastian Ripoll as they fell, 8-2. Alex Skrypko and Federico Murgier defended No. 1 doubles containing the short run that Petr Olsak and Arnaud Le Cloerec of VCU tried to make late in the game. The Mustang tandem outlasted VCU, 8-6. No. 3 doubles finished shortly after as Oivind Alver and Robin Fahgen tried to stormed back. The pair started their rally but were unable to get past Sergi Arumi and Sebastien Deridder of VCU as they fell, 8-5.
In singles action, Fahgen was unable to power past Lacombe at No. 5 as he fell, 6-1,6-3 and Murgier was unable to overturn Arumi at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3. VCU took the win as the singles match closed at No. 4 singles as Alver was edged by Deridder, 6-0, 7-5. Kucer came from behind in his first set to win and then carried the momentum into the second set as he was ahead before No. 54 Le Coerec of VCU retired. The Mustangs notched one win as the match was called afterwards and No. 1 and No. 6 singles did not finish. Skrypko was battling Olsak at No. 1 singles as he fell in the first set but was making a run in the second set for the lead. Hooshyar also dropped the first set but dominated the second set.
The Mustangs will battle their metroplex rival as they head to Ft. Worth to take on TCU next Wed., March 7 with the match slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
