SMU Football Head Coach Phil Bennett hosted his weekly press conference on Tuesday in advance of Saturday's SMU-UTEP C-USA opener. Below are some excerpts:
On moving into conference play...
"I think our players are very disappointed in losing that (TCU) game. They also understand that this is a new week and there's no way we're going to come back and be anything other than 1-3 in non-conference. I think we're very capable of competing and winning this conference, without question. I totally believe that."
On the UTEP game...
"This is a game, against UTEP, that we need to make improvement in and put a game together, offensively, defensively and special teams. Coming into conference, you've got to take 'em one game at a time and that's just our focus."
On his team...
"I still have great belief in this team. My hope is that all of our challenges of injuries and getting people in the right position are in the past and that we can take a step forward and start moving in the right direction.
