Brunstrom Continues Doubles Climb With Wimbledon Run

July 8, 2008

DALLAS (SMU) - Former Mustang Johan Brunstrom continued his climb in the world doubles rankings recently, as the Swede broke into the top 100 at No. 94. Brunstrom cracked the rankings after winning his first tournament and then qualifying for Wimbledon and winning a first-round match.

Brunstrom teamed with Julian Rojer at the International Championships of Andalusia and bested Dick Norman and James Cerretani, 6-4, 6-3, in the final to claim his first pro title.

In Wimbledon qualifying, Brunstrom and Australian teammate Adam Feeney topped Patrick Briaud and Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the main draw. In the opening round, Brunstrom and Feeney defeated Chris Haggard and Lovro Zovko in a five-set thriller, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The duo's run would end in round two, however, as they fell to the 12th-seeded tandem of Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Based on his strong showings, Brunstrom jumped 20 spots in the Stanford ATP Doubles rankings and is now ranked 94th in the world.
