DALLAS - SMU Head Coach June Jones and Assistant Coach Jeff Reinebold figure prominently in an emotional feature that will Tuesday night, Sept. 30, on ESPN's newsmagazine show, "E:60". The show will air at 6 p.m. CT.
The piece focuses on Brian Kajiyama, who was born with cerebral palsy which confined him to a wheelchair and stripped him of his ability to speak, and the extraordinary relationship he developed with Reinebold and Jones.
As a boy growing up in Hawaii, Kajiyama dreamed of playing football for the hometown Warriors. While he never would, he did the next best thing, becoming their biggest fan and watching practice every morning.
Everything changed for him when Coach Reinebold noticed Brian in the summer of 2005 and introduced himself. Soon thereafter, Reinebold and Brian developed a deep friendship. Reinebold would bring Brian around the football office, and Brian would offer his help. Soon he was helping the team prepare for their opponents. In 2007, Kajiyama was named a graduate assistant football coach by June Jones.
"E:60"'s Lisa Salters has this story of a Heart of a Warrior. "E:60" is ESPN's only primetime multi-subject newsmagazine show. It features in-depth reporting, long-form stories and a roster of award-winning reporters.
