DALLAS (SMU)-SMU women's tennis (4-0) is on a roll after shutting out Tyler Junior College (0-1) and Collins County Community College (0-1) by scores of 4-0 and 7-0, respectively on Saturday, January 31 at the Turpin Tennis Stadium.
Winning the doubles point against Tyler, the Mustangs swept the competition to start the match. Senior teammates Kristen Reid and Monica Neveklovska highlighted doubles action by blanking their opponents 8-0.
In singles action, juniors Sophie Quist and Pavi Francis made quick work of their Apache challengers, dropping only one set apiece in the victories. Reid was successful in two sets (6-2, 6-0) against Sureena Weir, while freshman Rachel Cox defeated Madelyn Lumpkin 8-3.
Though the Mustangs' doubles teams remain undefeated, it is Reid and Neveklovska who lead the squad with a perfect 4-0 record after handing Collins County Cougars Liwuslili and Kazu an 8-1 loss in their second match of the day.
Competing in her first match of the spring season, senior Kseniia Tokarieva discharged Cougar Tania Lorren in two sets (6-0, 6-1) for the singles victory. The Mustangs went on to win the singles competition without dropping a set.
"I was really pleased with our performance and our attitude today. Our team goals were to stay focused and maintain high, positive energy starting with our doubles and continuing into singles, I think we accomplished that.
We began the season with the hopes that we could give our players who were not able to play in the fall due to injury, early matches that would help build their confidence, while also challenging them at the same time. I think these first few matches have done just that and I am still very impressed with how those players have returned stronger than they were before," said head coach Lauren Longbotham-Meisner.
With the momentum building behind their 4-0 record, the Mustangs are focused and intent on continuing their exceptional play. "We have a big week coming up with two home matches on Monday and then a trip to Louisiana to face two conference opponents, as well as our first nationally-ranked opponent in LSU. The team has shown that they are definitely up for this challenge and this should be a good test for us," said Longbotham-Meisner.
SMU women's tennis will face Abilene Christian University at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the Turpin Tennis Stadium, with Texas A&M Corpus Christi to follow at 4:00 p.m..
