DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team earned its third victory of the season today with a 6-1 win over Lamar at Northwood Country Club. The Mustangs took seven the nine matches on the day.
In doubles, Arturs Kazijevs and Robert Sajovich teamed up in the No. 2 flight to earn a convincing 8-1 win over Denis Ermilov and Vukasin Roncevic. Gaston Cuadranti and Pablo Perez-Esnaola followed up to knock-off Bruno Snyder and Mikko Rajamaki, 8-4, in the third flight to give SMU the doubles point.
Sajovich gave the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage after picking up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carlos Valdenebro in the fourth flight. Despite a loss at the No. 2 slot, Cuadranti and Joseph Hattrup picked up straight-set victories in the fourth and sixth flights to seal the team win for SMU.
Kazijevs came back to win a three-set match after a dropping the first set to Marton Horvath, 2-6, in the No. 3 flight in the three sets. The freshman won the final two sets in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Tobias Flood earned the final win of the day for the Ponies in the fifth flight, edging Snyder, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
SMU (3-1) will remain in Dallas next weekend as the squad takes on Santa Clara on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. CT, at the Jewish Community Center.
