SMU Finishes Second At The Inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) - Junior diver Devin Burnett claimed his and SMU's third American Athletic Conference individual title as he placed first (399.65) in the platform dive as the SMU men's swimming and diving finished second at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship. Burnett won the 1-meter dive (386.80) on day one and the 3-meter dive (389.45) on day three. For his outstanding efforts, Burnett was named the 2014 American Athletic Conference Diver of the Meet. The four-day meet was hosted by Louisville in the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

Louisville won the team title as it scored 1072.5 points. Following the Cardinals was SMU (2nd, 768 points), UConn (3rd, 683.5 points) and Cincinnati (4th, 535 points).

In addition to Burnett in the platform dive, junior Hayden Hodges, sophomore Parker Meinecke and freshman Bryce Klein placed second (322.25), fourth (269.95) and seventh (246.70), respectively.

Due to the Mustang divers outstanding performances all week long, head diving coach Jim Stillson was named the 2014 Men's Diving Coach of the Year.

Senior Nicolai Hansen led the Mustangs swimmers as he placed fourth with a time of 1:58.58 in the 200-yard breaststroke. In the 200-yard butterfly, senior Tyler Rauth and freshman Tucker Wells finished fourth and eighth with times of 1:47.89 and 1:50.62.

Senior Ryan Koops, freshman Ziga Cerkovnik and senior Ramom Melo finished fourth (44.11), fifth (44.13) and sixth (44.29) in the 100-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard backstroke, junior Matas Andriekus finished fifth as he clocked a time of 1:45.81.

Andriekus, Cerkovnik, Hansen, Koops, Melo and Rauth all posted NCAA `B' standard qualifying times.

In the lone relay event of the day, the group of Hansen, Koops, Melo and Cerkovnik finished second with a time of 2:55.75 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
