American Athletic Conference Weekly Honors Release
Nov. 14, 2016
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) – SMU defensive back Horace Richardson was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Richardson had two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the Mustangs 55-31 victory last week at East Carolina. The Everman, Texas, native became the first SMU player with multiple defensive TDs in a game since Alvin Nnabuife recorded two fumble returns for TDs on Nov. 13, 2004. He recorded SMU's third and fourth pick-sixes of the season. Sophomore defensive back Jordan Wyatt has the other two.
Richardson's 70-yard return put the Mustangs in front 31-17 in the second quarter and his 80-yarder in the third made it 45-24. The senior set SMU records for interception return yards in a single-game (150), season (215) and career (234).
He now is tied for second in FBS with six interceptions on the season, which also ties him for eighth in program history for INTs in a season.
Richardson is the second SMU player to earn conference defensive player of the week accolades this season, joining senior defensive end Jarvis Pruitt (Oct. 24, 2016).
Wide receiver Courtland Sutton was named to the conference weekly honor roll after he set career highs in receptions (12) and receiving yards (166) with two touchdowns in the Mustangs victory. The Brenham, Texas, native recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season and seventh of his career. The sophomore now has 934 yards and seven TDs this season.
The Mustangs are back in action next Saturday, Nov. 19 when they welcome AAC East-leading USF to Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Kickoff is 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at smumustangs.com/tickets or by calling 214-768-4263.
