DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team won its 14th match of the season in dramatic fashion on Saturday, beating Dartmouth, 4-3, in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.

SMU (14-5) and Dartmouth (11-5) were tied at 3-3 with only the No. 6 singles match between junior Yates Johnson and Dartmouth's Eddie Grabill remaining undecided. Yates claimed the first set 6-3, but Grabill won the second set in a thrilling fashion of 7-6 (11-9). In the final set of the flight, Yates earned the win handily, 6-3, giving SMU the match-clinching fourth point.

"We've been having a lot of great battles lately and that definitely is one of them", said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. "Hats off to Dartmouth, they played an incredible match and it was hard fought and as close as you can get."

SMU open the match claiming the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Hunter and Yates Johnson picked up the first doubles victory for the Mustangs 6-3, and sophomore Samm Butler and junior Markus Kerner won the second doubles match 6-4.

"This is what college tennis is about, this matched signified what you'd hope to have as a coach whether you are winning or losing," said Neufeld. "It was two very good teams competing for three and a half hours and it was terrific."

After losing the first two singles match on No. 4 and No. 3, SMU tied the match up at two apiece after a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win from sophomore Ronald Slobodchikov. The Mustangs claimed the second singles win on No. two in a tight three-set match from Nate Lammons, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

SMU will be back in action tomorrow when they host a doubleheader, beginning with Marquette at noon CT. and closing against UTPB at 4:30 p.m. CT.
