College Station, Texas (SMU)— The No. 23 SMU men's tennis team dropped to No. 21 Baylor, 4-0, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend title match Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Complex. The Mustangs are now 3-2 on the season while the Bears improved to 4-0.
After a thrilling first round match against Ole Miss, the Mustangs returned to Mitchell Tennis Complex to face undefeated Baylor for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend title match. The Bears took an early lead, winning the doubles competition.
Samm Butler and
Ronald Slobodchikov fell to Baylor's Juan Benitez and Constantin Frantzen, 6-2, while
Markus Kerner and
Arkadijs Slobodkins dropped to Baylor's Johannes Schretter and Jimmy Beneck, 6-3.
In singles play, SMU's fight came up just short as the Bears claimed three victories on courts four, six and one to win the match.
The Mustangs return to action Thursday, Feb. 9 versus Army in West Point, N.Y., before taking on Dartmouth Saturday, Feb. 11 in Hanover, New Hampshire.
