PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Hunter Johnson,
Yates Johnson and
Ronald Slobodchikov received All-American Athletic Conference recognition, The American announced on Thursday. Slobodchikov earned All-AAC honors in singles, and the duo of Hunter and Yates earned All-AAC honors in doubles.
With the nominations, this marks the seventh time in eight years that SMU has been given all-conference recognitions in both disciplines.
Slobodchikov, the No. 66 ranked singles player in the nation, ended the regular season with 11 wins, tying the team-high. The junior has defeated three nationally ranked opponents this season, including a victory over then-No. 3 Mike Redlicki of Arkansas to secure the Mustangs' 4-3 win over then-No. 19 ranked Razorbacks. Slobodchikov has played at either the first or second position every match for the Mustangs.
Hunter and
Yates Johnson ended the regular season as the No. 24 ranked doubles team in the country after being ranked as high as No. 14 (April 4). Twin brothers posted a 7-2 final regular-season record, beating three nationally ranked opponents, including then-No. 14 Nunez and Rybakov of TCU, then-No. 20 Pham and Pham of Columbia and then-No.2 Cash and Kadhe of Oklahoma State.
No. 37 SMU takes on No. 18 Mississippi State Friday, May 12 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
