DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team (2-1) earned two victories in Friday's doubleheader, winning 4-3 against Tyler Junior College (0-1) and 4-1 against Abilene Christian (2-2).

SMU quickly found rhythm in doubles play against Tyler Junior College, the No. 1 team in the ITA Junior/Community College rankings. Karina Traxler and Liza Buss defeated Yuna Ito and Tamara Arnold in a quick 6-1 win. Ana Perez-Lopez and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki followed with a 6-2 victory over Kalani Soli and Oceane Garibal, clinching the Mustangs' first point.

Tyler Junior College played five nationally-ranked players in singles. Perez Lopez picked up SMU's second point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 17 Oceane Garibal. Nicole Petchey also picked up a victory at No. 6 singles, with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Afroditi Tzanopoulos. The Apaches fought back, earning three singles wins of their own to tie the match, 3-3.

No. 6 Maria Genovese defeated Anzhelika Shapovalova, 7-5, 6-1. Traxler and Buss each took their matches to the third set, but ultimately fell to the Apaches. Traxler lost 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles spot to No. 1 Tamara Arnold. Buss was defeated by No. 2 Kalani Soli, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Monarrez Yesaki battled for the final point againt No. 10 Yuna Ito. After falling behind 1-6 in the first set, Monarrez Yesaki managed to take the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5, to seal the victory for the Mustangs.

Hours later, SMU again found stride in doubles play against ACU. After Nicole Petchey/Liza Buss fell 3-6 against Ileana Mocciola/Autumn Crossnoe in No. 3 doubles, SMU won the remaining matches to secure the doubles point. Ana Perez-Lopez/Anzhelika Shapovalova defeated Lucile Pothier/Nini Memishishi, 6-3, and Karina Traxler/Sarai Monarrez Yesaki fought Whitney Williams/Sarah Eleanor Adams to a 7-5 win.

In singles play, Shapovalova and Perez-Lopez made quick work of their opponents, with Shapovalova defeating Whitney Williams 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot and Perez-Lopez winning 6-2, 6-1 in No. 6 singles. Traxler gave SMU its final point with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win over Sarah Eleanor Adams.

ACU's single point was earned with Nini Memishishi's 7-5, 6-4 win over Nicole Petchey in No. 5 singles.

The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 3, to play Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at noon at the SMU Tennis Complex.
