DALLAS (SMU) – SMU travels to Austin, Texas on Friday to play in the 45th Annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the UT Golf Club.
The three-day tournament is set for Oct. 19-21. The 54-hole event will feature 18 holes each day. Tee times on Friday and Saturday will begin at 8 a.m. CT, while Sunday will feature a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
"We're excited to play the Betsy Rawls," said Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland. "It's a great tradition and we love the golf course."
This marks the 45th year of the event, which began in March 1974. In 1977, the Texas Invitational was renamed to honor Betsy Rawls, a 1950 Texas graduate and one of the most prolific golfers of her day. Rawls won more than 50 tour championships between 1951 and 1975, including four U.S. Opens, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977.
The Course: The University of Texas Golf Club is located at Steiner Ranch in the Hill Country of northwest Austin, overlooking Lake Austin and is the new home of the Texas men's and women's golf teams. The UT Golf Club has a 7,412-yard, par 71 championship-caliber golf course created by Bechtol Russell Golf Design. Built in the Texas Hill Country, the course overlooks Lake Austin and borders the Balcones Natural Wildlife Preserve, offering challenging shots and views that rival the best in Austin.
Representing SMU: Brigitte Dunne, Kennedy Pedigo, Ana Paula Ramirez, Katie James, and Lauren Chappell. Sophie DiGesualdo will compete individually.
2018 Participating Teams: Alabama, Baylor, Colorado, Florida, Kent State, New Mexico, North Texas, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulane.
Results: Live results will be posted on Golfstat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on SMUMustangs.com at the end of each round.
About The Betsy Rawls Invitational
The Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational annually features many of the top women's golf teams in the country. Until 2010, players and coaches made their plans to come to Austin each spring to compete in one of the most prestigious regular-season tournaments in the country. It is now a fall tournament and, in 2018, the 45th edition of the tournament will take place Oct. 19-21 at The University of Texas Golf Club.
It was in March of 1974 that Texas head coach Pat Weis had the foresight to establish what has not only become a tradition at UT and Austin, but a tradition that dominates collegiate golf for one weekend. This annual event originally known as the Texas Invitational has evolved into one of the strongest collegiate invitational tournaments of the year.
In 1977, the Texas Invitational was renamed to honor Betsy Rawls, a 1950 Texas graduate and one of the most prolific golfers of her day. Rawls won more than 50 tour championships between 1951 and 1975, including four U.S. Opens, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977 and into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
The tournament champions' list reads like a "who's who" of women's golf. Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Jody Rosenthal, Val Skinner, Michiko Hattori and Annika Sorenstam are just a few of the past winners who have made the Betsy Rawls tournament one of the marquee events in women's golf.
In 2017, Texas won its first Betsy Rawls Invitational since 2011 with a 15-stroke victory. Senior Sophia Schubert claimed individual medalist honors in 2017 with a six-under-par 210, while sophomore Emilee Hoffman finished second.
