Mustangs Host Incarnate Word, Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Doubleheader

DALLAS (SMU) - After falling to Arkansas and No. 18 TCU last weekend, SMU continues its spring season with matches against Incarnate Word (2-5) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-9) on Saturday at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs will face UIW at 9:30 a.m. and UAPB at 4:30 p.m.
The Mustangs, now 3-6 overall, were unable to battle through singles after securing the doubles point Friday against Arkansas. Freshman Jan-Simon Vrbsky fell to No. 59 Jose Salazar in No. 1 singles, just his second loss of dual match season. On Sunday, SMU was unable to defend against No. 18 TCU's top-ranked doubles pair and two ranked singles players, losing 4-0 to the Horned Frogs.
SCOUTING INCARNATE WORD
After finishing 6-15 last season, Incarnate Word has picked up wins against Georgia Southern and St. Mary's this spring. The Cardinals boast a roster full of upperclassmen, returning five juniors and one senior. Junior Francisco Bendana holds UIW's best singles record, a 5-1 dual match total and 2-0 at No. 1 singles.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF
The Golden Lions have slid into a 1-9 stretch to begin the season and haven't won since their first match against Christian Brothers University. So far, the team's schedule has included four matches against LSU and a matchup against Tulsa. UAPB returns two seniors in Jualon Greig and Sajid Rahman and two juniors in Khusto Ledwaba and Simon Lewis.

SMU is 1-0 all-time against UIW, with the lone game being played at home in 2015. The Mustangs swept the Cardinals, 7-0. The UAPB Golden Lions last met SMU in 2017, where the Mustangs earned their second series win and first at home. They hold a 2-0 all-time record against UAPB dating back to 2010.

The SMU men's tennis team fell, 4-0, to No. 18 TCU on Sunday at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs are now 3-6, while the Horned Frogs improve to 5-2 on the season.
TCU gained momentum early in doubles play. Reese Stalder combined with Bertus Kruger at No. 3 doubles to defeat Charles Nettlefold and Roberto Rosales, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson defeated Eladio Fabregas and Gardiner Perotti, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
When doubles play was called, Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise were keeping up with No. 53 Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nunez, holding a 4-5 set score.
Despite winning the first sets on courts three and five, the Mustangs couldn't overpower the Horned Frogs. No. 80 Trevor Johnson defeated Charles Nettlefold, 6-1, 6-0, and Eduardo Roldan defeated Gardiner Perotti, 6-4, 6-0. TCU clinched the match on court one when No. 36 Alex Rybakov defeated Jan-Simon Vrbsky, 6-2, 6-3.

Early in spring dual match season, freshmen Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise have compiled standout performances. The pair combines for a 3-2 record at No. 1 doubles and each boasts a 4-2 singles record through nine matches. The pair has faced one ranked doubles pair, and Vrbsky has faced two nationally-ranked players.
LOOKING AHEAD
SMU travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma on Sunday, Feb. 25, to take on No. 9 Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. The matchup will be SMU's third against a ranked opponent this spring.
