Ojstersek, Miller Earn All-Conference In 10k On Day One Of Conference Championships

Mustangs in second place with 14 points after opening day of competition

CINCINNATI (SMU) – Svenja Ojstersek and Hannah Miller put the Mustangs on the board on day one of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships after winning silver and bronze in the 10,000-meter race.

Ojstersek earned her first career All-Conference honor after finishing in 35:31.43, just a second behind Wichita State's Winny Koskei. Miller repeated as the 10,000-meter bronze medalist with a time of 35:56.78.

The distance duo combined for 14 points to put the Mustangs in second place heading into day two.

Two Mustangs will appear in Sunday's 200-meter dash finals after impressive performances in Friday's trials. Latessa Johnson made a strong case in defense of her title by winning her heat in 23.05. The time bests an 8-year-old stadium record and puts the junior in first place heading to the finals.

Chelsea Francis won heat four in 23.48 to also automatically qualify for the finals.

Madison Pyle rounded out SMU's track events with a personal best finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior raced to a 1:00.30 finish that qualifies her for the event finals on Sunday evening and moves her to third in the event in SMU history.

In field events, SMU sent two throwers to the cage to compete in the hammer throw. Tochi Nlemchi missed finals by less than a meter (52.82m) to take 12th while Daniella Murchison claimed 17th (43.98m).

The Mustangs continue competition tomorrow beginning with the discus throw at 3 p.m. Track events will begin at 6:50 p.m. with the 100-meter trials, where Francis will aim to defend her 2017 100-meter title.
