The next stop in the Mustangs NCAA Championship run brings them to Charlottesville, Va., home of No. 1 seeded Virginia for an Elite Eight match on Friday night. It's SMU's first appearance in the Elite Eight since 2010.Â
With a win, the Mustangs would clinch a spot in their first College Cup since 2005.Â
The match will air on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX). Tickets can be purchased for $5 (general admission) or $8 (reserved seating) online and gates open one hour before kick.Â
The Mustangs are in their 13th Elite Eight in program history, carrying a record of 2-6-4 in previous games, winning in 2000 and 2005. It's SMU's first match with the No. 1 team in the country since a 2017 loss at Stanford in 2017. Friday's match pits two of the nation's top teams against each other as UVA tops the national RPI and SMU claims the No. 3 spot. Virginia leads the country in GAA (0.33) and the Mustangs possess the nation's 2nd most goals with 61. Virginia leads the nation with 19 wins and SMU is 2nd with 18 victories in 2019. Both teams are riding 8-game win streaks, tops in the country.Â
In its last time on the pitch, SMU defeated AAC foe No. 8 seeded UCF, 2-1, in overtime. The Mustangs had to come from behind against the Knights once again, trailing 1-0 in the first half. But SMU netted a penalty in the 36th minute and then MAC Hermann semifinalist, Eddie Munjoma, buried the game-winner in the 91st minute, pushing the Mustangs to the next round.Â
The Mustangs have had an historic season so far. Their 18 wins are tied for the 5th most in school history. SMU's 61 goals are tied for 5th most in school history and are the most since.
The Mustangs are ranked 5th in the country by the United Soccer Coaches and claimed the No. 3 spot in both the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News polls. They are the No. 3 team in the NCAA RPI and are the No. 8 national seed in this year's NCAA Championship, their first national seed since 2011.
SMU is 37-25-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
SMU and Virginia have met three times, but never in the NCAA Championship. The Mustangs hold a 3-0 series lead and have outscored UVA 9-2 in those matches, most recently SMU won 3-1 in a 2008 result.Â
The winner of Friday's match moves on to the College Cup in Cary, N.C., where they'll face either No. 4 Wake Forest or UC Santa Barbara on December 13.Â
