BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) – SMU Track & Field journeys to The American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, set for Friday through Saturday from the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The meet begins on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with first event, the pentathlon, and will run until the evening, with the final event of the day being the distance medley relay. The action resumes on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. for the women's field events, while the track portion begins with the mile at 11:20 a.m.

For the fourth straight year, Birmingham's CrossPlex will play host to the event. The CrossPlex will also host the NCAA Indoor Championships in the coming weeks. The American Digital Network will provide live coverage from the meet, and a stream will be available to watch on the ADN's Facebook page.

SMU has finished in the top four at The American in four of their five trips to the Championship, including a conference championship in the first ever AAC Indoor Meet in 2014.

Last season, the Mustangs finished in second at the AAC Indoor Championships. Hannah Miller was named Meet MVP by totaling the most points of any female athlete over the two-day event. The Mustangs had seven All-Conference performances, including three golds, two by Miller in the 5,000 and 3,000m. Latessa Johnson set the meet record in the 200m with a time of 23.17, winning the other gold. Silvers were won in the DMR with the combo of Miller, Madison Pyle, Ashton Woods and Tess Misgen. Chelsea Francis finished in second in the 60m and earned a bronze for her 200m performance. Cassie Ackemann finished third in the high jump. Cincinnati won the women's title with a total of 147 points.

Francis currently sits in a qualifying position tied for 15th for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60m. Francis has the conference's top time in the 60m and the second best time in the 200m, trailing only Brianne Bethal of Houston. The junior set a program record with her time in the 60m earlier this season.

Chika Iwuamadi comes to Birmingham with the conference's second-best time in the 400m. The freshman broke the SMU record in the event earlier this season at the MLK Jr. Invite in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

For the first time this season, the Mustangs will compete in the distance medley relay. SMU finished second in the DMR last season, running the second fastest time in program history.

Olivia Witt will compete in the pentathlon for the Mustangs. The freshman finished with a score of 3180 at the Houston Invitational.

In the throwing events, senior Daniella Murchison is set to compete in the weight throw and shot put. Murchison set a PR in the weight throw in the first meet of 2019.

Miller travels to Birmingham, looking to defend her crown in the 5,000 and 3,000m. The reigning AAC Indoor MVP has the conference's best mark in the 3,000m, as she set the SMU record at the Music City Challenge. Miller also holds the second best time in the 5,000m and eighth best in the mile.

SMU has the 22nd ranked 5,000m squad according to the USTFCCCA, thanks to the deep contingent of Mustangs in the event. Seniors Svenja Ojstersek and Anneke Grogan sit at 4th and 12th in the conference respectively in the event.

Competing in her first season with the Mustangs, junior transfer Nicole Illoyana impressed with her distances in the triple jump, holding the conference's third best mark. Illoyana will also compete in the long jump over the weekend. Ackemann and Witt are slated to appear in the high jump. Ackemann holds the Mustangs' best mark, clearing 1.70 earlier this season.
