INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – SMU men's tennis split a road doubleheader on Friday with a 4-3 loss to IUPUI followed by a 5-2 win over Butler.

"Nothing can replicate competition except for competition," said head coach
Grant Chen. "Credit to IUPUI for playing well today. It will help us for future dual matches when it comes down to those final matches. Proud of the guys for responding in the second match in unfamiliar conditions. We will look forward to four matches at home this week."

In the first match of the day, SMU faced off with IUPUI at the Pearson Automotive Tennis Center. The Jaguars took the first point of the day with a 2-1 win in doubles.
Tomas Vaise and
Juan Jose Bianchi prevailed on court one with a 6-2 win. After
Jack Kite and
John Zisette lost on court three, IUPUI managed to take the doubles point with a 7-5 over
Caleb Chakravarthi and
Clarke Wilson on No. 2.

IUPUI made it 2-0 in singles after a win on court six, 7-5, 7-5 over
Kyle Pham. Chakravarthi (7-5, 6-1) and Wilson (7-6 [2], 6-1) evened the match with wins on courts 1 and 3.

Vaise put the Mustangs in front for the first time with a three-set win on court 2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
John Zisette won his first set on court five but couldn't get past IUPUI's Emil Jankowski in sets two or three. The match came down to court four where Bianchi had narrowly lost set one in a tiebreaker. The sophomore would finish on the wrong end of a 7-6 [3], 6-4 score giving IUPUI the 4-3 victory.

In the second match, the Mustangs traveled to Butler's campus for a showdown with the Bulldogs. SMU flipped the script a doubles point victory. The freshman combo of
Liam Krall and
Julian Steinhausen won 6-4 on the top line followed by
Callaway Clark and
Jordi Redelijk winning 6-3 on line two.
Kyle Sillman and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky were up 6-5 at the time of clinch.

With just four courts available, the top four lines started the action with lines five and six waiting in the wings.

On line four, Redelijk gave the Mustangs their second point with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Steinhausen followed that up with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court three, his team-leading eighth victory of the season. With a 3-0 SMU lead,
Liam Krall shrugged off a 1-6 first set score to comeback and win his fifth-consecutive match, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, securing the SMU win.

Vrbsky bounced back after a first set loss to win set two. His opponent retired with Vrbsky leading in the third.

After the Mustangs clinched the match,
Callaway Clark and
Eddie Ross hit the courts for their lines five and six matches. Ross lost, 6-2, 6-4 on six while Clark split his first two sets before dropping the supertiebreaker 10-7.
