PINEHURST, N.C. – The SMU women's golf team is playing its best golf of the season entering the 2021 American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship, which takes place April 18-20 at Pinehurst No. 6.
Â
The final round of the event is broadcast on ESPN+, with Lincoln Rose and Ed Clements on the call. The broadcast includes featured holes on the course.
Â
The Mustangs are coming off a season-best second-place finish at the Lone Star Invitational, an event where SMU had their best 54-hole score since 2015-16 and finished par or better in each round for only the second time in school history.
Â
Kennedy Pedigo leads the Mustangs into the conference championship, coming off of her second top-10 of the season with a solo-ninth finish at the Lone Star Invitational. She leads the team with a 74.24 stroke average, which ranks among the top-10 for a single-season in SMU history, and is coming off her best 54-hole performance of the season, shooting -3.
Â
Serena Shah has played steady entering her first AAC Championship, having finished in the top-20 in two of her last three events. She tied for 11th at the Lone Star Invitational and tied for 17th at the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. Shah has four rounds of at least even-par this season, and holds the Mustangs' best round of the season, a 5-under 67 on March 28 to open The Bruzzy.
Â
Sophie DiGesualdo made her return to the lineup at the Lone Star Invitational, and shot +1 to tie for 13th. DiGesualdo has only played in two tournaments this season, but has the second-best stroke average on the squad at 75.33.
Â
Lauren Chappell brings the most previous success of the Mustang lineup at the AAC Championship, which did not take place in 2020, posting a T12th finish in 2018. Chappell tied for 20th at The Golf Club of Houston, highlighted by a -2 second round at the Lone Star Invitational.
Â
Nicole Vivier is the only freshman in the SMU lineup at the 6,290-yard / par 72 Fazio-designed layout. Vivier has two top-20 finishes on the season, in her first event (Trinity Forest Invitational) and most recent event (Lone Star Invitational). She marked both of those tournaments with opening-round 70s.
Â
This year's championship is the first time the American has contested its championship outside of Florida, and is headed to the Cradle of American Golf. The famous Pinehurst Resort has traditionally been kind to golfers from SMU, and the resort has produced several Mustang champions. Payne Stewart won the 1999 U.S. Men's Open, Ben Wong won the 2017 USGA Men's Amateur Four-Ball and Brigitte Dunne won the 2014 North and South Junior Girls Championships, all at the Pinehurst Resort. Stewart's win is commemorated with a statue of his iconic fist-pump celebration at the resort.
Â
The Mustangs tee off with East Carolina at 8:20 a.m. CT on Sunday for the opening round. The 54-hole tournament concludes with one round apiece on Monday and Tuesday.
