Phoenix (DALLAS) – SMU women's golf will travel to Phoenix, Arizona for a two-day tournament at Grand Canyon's GCU Golf Course February 28th through March 1st. The Mustangs are coming off a strong first outing of the spring at the Tulane Classic where sophomore Ashley Chow put together her best career tournament finish, tied for 17th.
SMU and GCU will be the top ranked teams in the 19-team field. The Antelopes will come into the tournament at No. 93, while the Mustangs will lead the pack at No. 84.
Last Time Out
SMU concluded the tournament in New Orleans in the top half of the leaderboard, finishing in eighth place out of 17 teams. Kennedy Pedigo led the Mustangs with seven birdies over the course of the three-day tournament. She also finished tied for fourth in the field in par 3 scoring with an even total (E, 3.00). Ashley Chow was tied for fifth in par 5 scoring, under par at -1 (4.92).
Revamped Trinity Forest
SMU's schedule is highlighted by the Mustangs' home tournament, the Trinity Forest Invitational, scheduled for March 7-8. Mason and the team have been working extremely hard to make this tournament one of the most professionally hosted and competitively attended contests across the nation. They look to improve upon their 6th/14 finish from last season.
Playing the Best
The Mustang's spring schedule includes tournaments in Arizona, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Washington. They will enjoy trips to three of Golfweek's Top 200 Modern Courses; Trinity Forest, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, and Chambers Bay Golf Club, the host of the 2015 Men's U.S. Open and the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur.
Wisconsin Champions
Head Coach Lauren Mason took over the program in July 2021, and led the Mustangs to a tournament win at the Badger Invitational in September. SMU came back with a final round -4 to take home their first title since March 2019. Katie James and Kennedy Pedigo finished the tournament tied for third with even par overall scores.
On & Off the Course
SMU women's golf achieved a cumulative fall GPA of 3.68. Megan Daleo and Nicole Vivier were also named to the Honor Roll for being in the top 15% academically among students at SMU last semester. Mason puts a large emphasis on her athlete's discipline both on and off the course.
