Mustangs Defeat No. 35 San Diego On The Road

San Diego native Ivan Thamma clinches for SMU

SAN DIEGO (SMU) – In their final match of the four-match road trip, SMU beat No. 35 San Diego 4-3. Ivan Thamma clinched the match for the Mustangs after an outstanding comeback. SMU improves its record to 8-3, while the Toreros fall to 6-2. The Mustangs have now won five in a row including their ranked victory at No. 18 Texas A&M on February 27th.

SMU came out firing in the doubles matches. Liam Krall and Pranav Kumar won in the No. 2 spot 6-4. On court one, Adam Neff and Ivan Thamma decisively beat San Diego's No. 43 in the nation doubles team of Holmgren and Osorio 6-3 with two big breaks in the match. The Mustang duo handed the Toreros' top team their first loss of the year.

San Diego's No. 8 ranked August Holmgren got his team on the board to tie the match at 1-1, winning at the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 6-2.

Pranav Kumar pulled SMU back ahead 2-1 with his fourth straight singles victory. Kumar trailed 1-5 before winning the next seven games to take the first set. The grad senior did not slow down in the second set, dominating 6-1. Kumar won 12 of the final 13 games of his match.

Once again, the Toreros fought back, winning at No. 3 to level the score at 2-2.

Caleb Chakravarthi put together a very strong performance in the No. 2 position, winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 to bring SMU within one match of the overall victory. San Diego took No. 5 singles in an exciting three-set match to again level the score, 3-3.

San Diego native Thamma took the stage with the overall match on the line. After losing the first set 6-7, the grad senior trailed 1-4 in the second. He would go on to win the next five games, sending the decisive match to a third set. Thamma went down a break, but once again showed tremendous resilience, battling back to win the next four games and take the deciding set 6-4.

Win Streaks
Pranav Kumar extended his singles winning streak to four matches. He is undefeated at the No. 4 spot at 4-0.
Adam Neff and Ivan Thamma have won three straight doubles matches. They are 5-2 for the season at the No. 1 spot.

Next Time Out
The Mustangs will return home for their Match of the Month against Oklahoma State on March 11th at 5:00 p.m. at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
