Mustangs Travel To Stillwater For ITA Kickoff Weekend

Set to open with Arkansas on Saturday at 3 p.m.

DALLAS (SMU) — The SMU women's tennis team continues their road stretch to start the season as they travel to Stillwater, Okla., to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend starting Saturday, Jan. 25.

SMU prepares for a four-team regional, including SMU, Arkansas, No. 4 Oklahoma State, and Clemson. The Mustangs will open against Arkansas on Saturday at 3 p.m., with Oklahoma State and Clemson to face off at 12 p.m. The winners of Saturday's matches will play for a chance to advance to the ITA Indoor National Championships on Sunday at 2 p.m., while the losers will play a consolation match at 11 a.m.

Coach Nevolo and the Mustangs are coming off a hard-fought loss to No. 21 Vanderbilt last weekend, falling 5-2 to the Commodores in Nashville. SMU is 1-1 on the season, securing their first win of the spring calendar in their season opener versus 7-0.

QUICK FACTS
  • The open matchup between the Mustangs and the Razorbacks will be the 27th meeting between the two programs. SMU leads the all-time series 17-9, with the first meeting dating back to the 1981-82 season and the last meeting being SMU's 4-3 win in Dallas just a year ago.
  • Oklahoma State leads the overall series over SMU 5-4. The Mustangs are 2-2 in Stillwater and have lost each of the last two matchups, which snapped a four-match win streak prior. The most recent matchup was last season in the NCAA Tournament second round, where the Cowgirls defeated the Mustangs 4-0.
  • If SMU and Clemson were to meet up, it would be the first matchup between the two programs.
  • The Mustangs have newcomers on the 2024-25 roster, including three freshmen and two transfers. Arianna Stavropoulos comes to the Hilltop after three seasons at UC Davis, and Ellie Pittman makes the move to Dallas after two playing seasons at Texas A&M.
  • Oklahoma State enters the weekend ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA rankings. Clemson entered the spring season, receiving votes in the ITA Preseason Poll.
  • The duos of Pittman/Llewellyn and Morris/Stavropoulos are 2-0 to start doubles play. Millie Skelton is 2-0 on the season in singles action.
  • Last time out, SMU fell to No. 21 Vanderbilt 5-2. The Mustangs started strong, claiming the doubles point, but dropped the first five singles matchups.
  • Millie Skelton and June Bjork went 4-0 in the fall season and finished the fall slate as the No. 75 ranked doubles pair by the ITA.
  • SMU enters their sixth season of the Jeff Nevolo era, coming off a stellar 2024 season in which they produced a 14-12 overall record, claimed the AAC Championship while also reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament after beating No. 33 Alabama 4-3 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
