DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis will host Georgia Tech and No. 23 Clemson for its ACC home opener weekend on Friday and Sunday.
The Mustangs will face Georgia Tech in its first-ever home ACC match on Friday before facing the 23
rd-ranked Clemson to wrap up the weekend on Sunday.
SMU was ranked No. 61 in the latest ITA team rankings released on March 4.
SMU vs GEORGIA TECH
- This match will be the third meeting between the Mustangs and the Yellow Jackets.
- The two teams are tied 1-1, and all their meetings are held at neutral sites.
- The last time SMU played against Georgia Tech was more than two decades ago in the 2004 NCAA Championship first round. The Mustangs swept the Yellow Jackets 4-0.
- Georgia Tech was ranked 42nd in the latest ITA rankings.
- One Yellow Jacket was ranked in the singles ranking (No. 120 Nate Bonetto). Two GT doubles pairs were ranked; Nate Bonetto/Gianluca Carlini (No. 24) and Christophe Clement/Krish Arora (No. 33).
SMU vs No. 23 CLEMSON
- SMU and Clemson will meet for the 10th time on Sunday. First between the two teams meeting in Dallas
- The Mustangs played against the Tigers last season when SMU fell 5-2 at Clemson.
- Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the latest ITA Team Rankings.
- Two Tigers were ranked in the singles; No. 58 Noa Vukadin and No. 84 Wissam Abderrahman.
- In doubles, Noa Vukadin and Maxwell Smith were ranked No. 56 as a pair.
SMU vs MIAMI
- SMU Men's Tennis fell 4-2 in a close battle at Miami on its ACC opener in the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday.
- Miami took an early lead with the doubles point before extending the lead by winning the first singles point.
- SMU bounced back with back-to-back singles wins to tie the match, but the Mustangs dropped matches on courts five and six and the hosts clinched the match.
- Four singles matches went to three sets and one remained unfinished after seeing two tiebreakers.
SMU vs FLORIDA STATE
- SMU Men's Tennis fell 4-0 at Florida State in its second ACC match on Sunday.
- The Mustangs fought hard through doubles and singles but fell short in each match against the Seminoles. They are now 9-8 ahead of their ACC home opener.
TWO RANKED MUSTANGS
- Two Mustangs were ranked in the ITA's Singles Ranking on March 4.
- Trevor Svajda remained in the rankings at No. 94, and Jerry Barton was ranked No. 115.
SERVIN' SVAJDA
- Svajda was ranked No. 94 in the current ITA singles rankings.
- He made the San Diego Open quarterfinal round last weekend and earned a qualifier wild card to the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. He fell in the first round of the Indian Wells Open.
- He has one win against a ranked opponent this season.
- Sophomore Trevor Svajda joined SMU as the No. 1 tennis recruit in the nation.
- Svajda was ranked no. 19 at the start of the 2024 fall season and ended the season ranked 48th.
- Svajda defeated No. 77 ranked Azuma Visaya in the first flight singles on the Mustangs' season-opener at Hawaii.
- He earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Individual Championship after reaching the semifinal round of the ITA Sectional Championship with a win over Nebraska's Calvin Meuller in the quarterfinals.
- Svajda earned AAC All-Conference honors (singles) and was named the AAC Freshman of the Year in 2024.
- Svajda has a 16-7 record in his freshman season with the Mustangs.
- Svajda earned five singles wins over ranked opponents last season (No. 17, No. 29, No. 35, No. 68, No. 107).
GEORGI "6-0, 6-0" GEORGIEV
- Georgiev earned his first collegiate ranking at No. 117 on Feb.25 after going undefeated against ranked opponents in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
- He grabbed back-to-back wins against ranked opponents. He defeated No. 69-ranked Charlelie Cosnet from Kentucky (6-0, 6-3) before defeating No. 117 Patorn Hanchaikul (6-0, 6-3).
- He has won two matches without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0).
