PITTSBURGH (SMU) – Highlighted by
Nyah Rose's brace, the SMU women's soccer program had an offensive explosion, shutting out Pitt 4-0 on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
SMU (7-3-2, 1-1-1 ACC) scored four goals in 17 minutes of game action in the second half to earn it's first ACC win of the season. Pitt (5-5-2, 1-3-0 ACC) who entered the game with an RPI of 60 tallied 13 shots but was denied by
Aubrey Brown (three saves) and the SMU backline.
After a scoreless first half, SMU put its foot on the gas and never let up. Rose started the scoring onslaught with her first goal of the game in the 63
rd minute as she corralled a ball from
Sydney Japic right in front of the net and sent a rocket into the lower left corner.
Continuing to attack in the 70
th minute,
Paxton Bock and
Zoe Parkhurst found
Sammy Nieves free inside the box, who flipped a shot over the Pitt goalkeeper and into the back of the net to increase the lead to two. Nieves scored her second goal of the season.
Just minutes later, SMU found the back of the net once again, executing a free kick to perfection as
Sydney Japic headed in a ball to put SMU up 3-0 in the 76
th minute. The senior Japic scored her first career goal as Bock earned her second assist of the game.
Rose put the finishing touches on the game in the 80
th minute, netting her second goal of the night on a feed from
Liz Eddy. The goal was Rose's 20
th career goal, and she now leads the team in goals scored this season with four.
The victory marked SMU's fifth shutout win of the season and the 22
nd under head coach
Nicole Nelson.
The four goals scored by the Mustangs are the most goals scored in a road ACC game by SMU since it joined the conference. SMU has now scored 20 goals this season and is outscoring opponents 20-10.
