SMU Collects Two Wins on Saturday

Feb. 27, 2016

Final Stats

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's tennis team picked up two wins on Saturday, beating both Eastern Washington and George Washington 7-0, 6-1 respectively inside Turpin Stadium.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start winning the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. On court two juniors Hunter and Yates Johnson earn the first doubles win 6-1, followed by junior Julio Olaya and freshman Marcus Knutzon 6-3 win to give SMU the doubles point. Senior Nate Lammons and junior Arkadijs Slobodkins finished off the sweep with a 6-4 win.

In singles play, junior Tony Russell got the scoring going for SMU, winning 6-1, 6-0 on court six. Olaya earned his first singles win of the dual season after a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The Mustangs claimed the match after sophomore Charles Nettlefold defeated Vuk Vucckovic 6-0, 6-2.

"We had 10 different guys played today and all played very well winning every match expect for one," said Head Coach Carl Neufeld. "I'm very proud of the way the guys stepped up in both matches and I thought we proved a lot in both singles and doubles today."

The Mustangs went on to win the remaining singles matches on courts one, two and three to pick their fourth sweeping win of the season.

SMU had a brief break before hosting George Washington. Junior Markus Kerner and sophomore Ronald Slobodchikov picked up the first doubles win and the duo of Lammons and Slobodkins gave SMU the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.

"Nate was terrific today, playing at the one spot in all four of his matches, showing how he is the iron man of this team," said Neufeld. "It's tough to ask anybody to play two matches at the number one spot but when somebody is able to do it for four matches and succeed it's pretty impressive."

The Mustangs continued their momentum into singles play winning five of the six singles matches. Lammons clinched his singles match 6-4, 6-2 to push SMU's lead to 2-0. Yates upped the Mustangs lead after a straight set victory of 6-4, 6-4. Hunter clinched the match for the Mustangs after defeating Chris Fletcher 6-4, 6-4, giving SMU its second win on the day.

The Mustangs continue their home stand when conference-foe Temple comes to visit on Wednesday. Doubles action is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
