New York City (SMU) – The Mustangs split a doubleheader with No. 9 Columbia and Wagner on Saturday as a part of their Mustangs In Manhattan trip. Jan-Simon Vrbsky highlighted the effort with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the 10th-ranked player in the country.

In the first half of the twin-billing, SMU met the 9th-ranked Lions of Columbia at their home courts of the Dick Savitt Tennis Complex. The doubles point went down to the wire in a truly exciting start to the day. Avery Pennywell and Blaise Fagan dropped their match on No. 3, 6-1. Carles Sarrio and Huntley Allen teamed up to take down their opponent, 6-3 on court two. Vrsbky and Tomas Vaise faced the 12th-ranked doubles team of Lin and Tang. Vrbsky/Vaise had an opportunity to clinch the point but Columbia won a pair of set-points to force a tiebreaker. Columbia would prevail in the tiebreaker, winning the first point.

Vrsbky would win the lone Mustang point as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court No. 2 over No. 10 Jack Lin. On one, Sarrio fell to the 65-ranked player in 6-0 fashion in both sets. Michael Smith and Gardiner Perotti dropped their matchups by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively. Roberto Rosales rallied from a significant deficit to force a tiebreak on No. 3, but came out on the wrong end 7-4. Vaise won his first set against No. 89 Jackie Tang but lost the second in a tiebreaker and dropped the super tiebreaker.

With the 6-1 victory, Columbia improved to 7-1 on the season with their only loss coming to top-ranked Wake Forest.

In the evening match, SMU met Wagner at a neutral site, The Bronx's Cary Leeds Center for Tennis and Learning. The Mustangs won the doubles point with Sarrio and Allen again teaming up for the win. Andrew Buhelos and Rory Samuels were winners on the second court with Pennywell/Fagan ending their match at five points a piece.

Jan won his second match of the day with a win on No. 1. This time he needed a third-set super tiebreaker to win his matchup.

Roberto rallied to win the first set before dropping the second. He would come away with a win in the super tiebreaker. Vaise, 6-0, 6-4, and Perotti, 7-5, 6-3, pulled out three matches with Perotti clinching match with the Mustangs' fourth point.

Buhelos had no trouble on No. 5, cruising to a two set victory losing just three points. Eddie Ross found himself down a set but was able to force the tiebreaker. In the end, Ross finished on the wrong end of a third-set tiebreaker to put the final score at 6-1 in favor of the Mustangs with their first win away from the SMU Tennis Complex.

On Sunday, the Mustangs will wrap up their New York excursion with a trip to the Billie Jean King Tennis Facility, host of the US Open as well as a hit at Randall Island. The Mustangs sit at 9-7 on the season after the doubleheader.
