MADISON, Wisc.- SMU women's golf heads to the Badger Invitational for the first tournament of the 2021-22 season, and the first under new head coach Lauren Mason.
Â
The tournament presents a prime opportunity for the Mustangs to compete against schools from several different regions. The 12-team field features seven teams from Power 6 conferences, with four teams from the Big Ten (hosts Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa and Rutgers) plus representation from the ACC (Notre Dame) and Pac-12 (Washington State) joining the Mustangs in the field. Colorado State, Grand Canyon, Old Dominion, Pepperdine and UC Davis comprise the remainder of the field.
Â
Kennedy Pedigo leads the Mustang contingent into the field, having picked up AAC All-Conference recognition a season ago. Over the summer, Pedigo finished second in medal play at the US Women's Amateur, with a -4 score, plus Round of 16 appearances at the Women's Western Amateur and the Texas State Amateur. Dating back to the Spring of 2021, Pedigo has finished the stroke-play portion of 5 of her last seven tournaments 12th-or-better, a span that includes the AAC Championship and U.S. Women's Amateur.
Â
Ashley Chow enters the SMU lineup after a strong summer of amateur golf, finishing second at the Women's Porter Cup, 13th at the Canadian Women's Amateur, and reaching the round of 16, with SMU teammate Katie James, at the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball. Chow's freshman year was highlighted by a top-25 finish at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.
Â
James returns to the lineup, after posting her fourth straight top-15 finish at the Pennsylvania Women's State Amateur this summer, in addition to her success with Chow at Maridoe Golf Club at the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball.
Â
Serena Shah looks to continue her momentum from the spring, where she improved upon her season-best finish in four of her last five tournaments, culminating with a tie for ninth at the AAC Championship. She takes to the par 72 / 6,302-yard track after posting a 75.62 stroke average in 2021, trailing only Pedigo among Mustangs with 10+ rounds.
Â
Megan Chou begins her sophomore season looking to post another impressive season debut, having finished in the top-25 to start her college career at last season's Trinity Forest Invitational.
Â
As the tournament returns from a 10-year hiatus, a Mustang is the reigning champion of the event. In the final version of the Badger Invitational before this 10-year pause, SMU's Felicia Espericueta captured the individual crown with the second-best score (215) in the tournament's history. Espericueta is one of just five women to break par over 54 holes at University Ridge.
Â
The Mustangs tee off in the first of three rounds at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday, with rounds to follow on Monday and Tuesday. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.
