The No. 36 SMU women's tennis team returns to the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday to host three opponents in 24 hours.
The Mustangs (5-3, 1-0 AAC) open the slate with a Sunday doubleheader against Arkansas, followed by a 5 p.m. first serve against UT Arlington. In a short turnaround, SMU follows up hosting Wisconsin on Monday afternoon.
Arkansas
The Razorbacks (6-3, 0-0 SEC) enter Sunday's match in search of its first road win of the season. Arkansas is the winner of two-straight, both in Fayetteville versus Wichita State (4-0) and Arkansas State (4-1), respectively.
SMU looks to gain ground in the all-time series against the Razorbacks, who hold a 7-3 advantage. The Mustangs, winners of two of the last three matches against Arkansas, lost their last matchup against the Razorbacks 5-2 on Jan. 24
th of the 2020-21 season. In the affair,
Jackie Nylander defeated current Arkansas sophomore Indianna Spink in tiebreaker fashion on line one, earning a 7-5, 2-6, 10-6 win. Then-sophomore
Hadley Doyle claimed victory on court three against current Razorback graduate senior Tatum Rice.
Nylander, along with partner
Chandler Carter, also claimed a doubles win over Spink and freshman Morgan Cross.
UT Arlington
UT Arlington (9-0, 0-0 SBC) competes in the first road match of its season on Sunday versus the Mustangs. The undefeated Mavericks face an SMU program that holds a 13-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two, and has not lost to a Sun Belt opponent since falling 4-3 against ULM on April 14, 2017. SMU is the winner of five consecutive matches against the Mavericks, its last loss occurring on April 7
th, 2016 in Arlington.
In the last matchup between SMU and UTA, the Mustangs earned a 4-0 victory in their first shutout against the Mavericks since 2013. In the match, Nylander/Doyle, along with senior

Winslow Huth, both claimed 7-5 and 6-0 wins in doubles. Doyle defeated current UTA senior Liz Chileno 6-4, 6-2 on court two, Petchey defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-2, and then-junior
Katherine Jakeway won 6-1, 6-2 against UTA's Bruna Casampere.
The Mavericks are a combined 47-7 in dual singles matches, and 17-3 in doubles play through the open of the spring season.
Wisconsin
SMU's Monday match against No. 50 Wisconsin (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten) represents the Mustangs' first Big Ten opponent since facing Iowa in 2018, and just the second all-time match against the Badgers. SMU took a 4-3 win over Wisconsin at home on March 2
nd, 2013 to open the all-time series 1-0. The Badgers have not played an American Conference opponent since Jan. 29
th, 2016.
Wisconsin enters Monday's match looking to regain its early season momentum and notch a second-straight win, after starting 4-0 then dropping four of its proceeding five matches. In each of its current six dual wins, the Badgers have claimed the doubles point in each match.
Wisconsin junior Xinyu Cai recently filed in at No. 76 in the ITA's latest singles rankings, while senior Ava Markham made her debut this year at No. 110.
The doubles team of Alina Mukhortova and Cai also earned a place in the latest ITA rankings, checking in at No. 35 with a dual record of 8-2.
Last Time Out
SMU returns home coming off an electric 4-3 win against current No. 55 Mississippi State in Waco on Sunday, Feb. 19. In the contest, both doubles and singles wins for SMU were decided by a single court. The line three pairing of Petchey/Huth clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs in a 9-7 tiebreaker decision. Petchey followed up their doubles-winning performance with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win on line six, elevating the Mustangs to its first win over an SEC opponent since defeating LSU on Feb. 20, 2011, and garnering AAC Player of the Week honors.
2020-21 Notes
SMU completed its 2020-21 season with 21 wins, the most since the 2011 season (23). The mark was good for the fourth-most wins in the nation, and a final national ranking of 45th.
The Mustangs won 12 of 14 doubles points to conclude its season, including a stretch of seven consecutive during a string of matches that included four ranked teams.
Doyle and Nylander proved a key doubles pairing for SMU as the duo went 10-8 on the season, climbed as high as No. 30 nationally, and finished the regular season ranked 87th.
Bartolome and former Mustang
Chandler Carter compiled a 13-1 record on court two in doubles, finishing their season with eight consecutive wins.
Nylander handled court one for SMU, amassing a 13-8 record and finishing the season with two top-100 wins and 6-1 against American Conference opponents.
Senior
Nicole Petchey went 16-4 on the season, an effort that included a 12-1 stretch over the final 21 matches of the Mustangs' regular season.
Claudia Bartolome won 14 matches in her third season at SMU, including a four-match stretch against ranked opponents in which she claimed singles victory in each.
