CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (SMU)  – SMU women's golf leads the field by five strokes after round one of the Chattanooga Classic from Council Fire Golf Club.

Looking for their third-straight tournament victory, the Mustangs started the day near the top of the field. They sat in second place, three shots back of first at mid round. SMU gained ground on first place Notre Dame during the back nine before overtaking them and going in front. The Mustangs built their lead to five strokes by the end of the day.

Lauren Miller shot her best round of the season with a score of two-under par (70) in round one. Miller sits in a tie for third place after a day that included five birdies.

Also in a tie for third,
Ellie Szeryk had an incredible back nine shooting four-under for the nine holes. Szeryk ended her day with a score of 70, just two strokes back of the tournament leader.

Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang had her 17
th round of par or better on the season, ranking third best all-time at SMU, during Sunday's round. Zhang shot a 72 to wrap up the day in tie for sixth, four shots off the lead.

Mackenzie Lee carded a 76 to end play in a tie for 36
th while
Ashley Chow shot a 78 to sit in a tie for 51
st.

The Mustangs return for 18 holes on Monday at Council Fire Golf Club. They will be paired alongside golfers from Notre Dame and Minnesota and start to tee off at 11 a.m. ET / 10 a.m. CT.
