DALLAS (SMU) – Behind
Liz Eddy's brace, the SMU women's soccer program ended (RV) California's nine-game unbeaten streak by defeating the Golden Bears 2-1 on Sunday inside Washburne Stadium.
SMU (8-3-2, 2-1-2 ACC) used a dominant second-half performance to secure its sixth home victory of the season. The Mustangs outshot California (6-2-6, 2-1-2 ACC) 12-3 in the second half and 16-5 over the course of the entire game.
Liz Eddy recorded her second career brace, scoring both goals in the second half. The McKinney, Texas native has now scored three goals this season.
After a scoreless first half, SMU put its foot on the gas in the second and broke the scoreless tie in the 64
th minute. Eddy got free behind Cal's back line on a feed from
Sammy Nieves and
Lindsay Nicholson and took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity and slipped on past reigning ACC Defender of the Week, goalkeeper Teagan Wy to give the Mustangs the lead.
Nieves earned her sixth assist of the season on the play.
In the 69
th minute, Cal got on the scoreboard after an own goal by the Mustangs.
Not deterred, SMU continued to apply pressure. After some fancy dribbling from Nicholson, she found Eddy once again, who flipped one into the game-winning goal into the back of the net in the 84
th minute.
SMU held the ball in the attacking position frequently in the second half, which resulted in eight of their nine corner kicks in the game. SMU entered the game ranked 17
th in the NCAA in corner kicks per game.
Cal entered the game with an RPI of 52, and SMU is only the fourth team this season to score multiple goals against the Golden Bears.
The match was also Alumni Day for the Mustangs. Former players were honored at halftime to celebrate the 40
th season in program history.
