Sanders Becomes First Female ACC Champion

Results

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) — The 2026 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships had its third and final day of competition on Saturday, and it was full of history-making moments for the Mustangs.

The afternoon kicked off with Ariana Sutton, Haylie Donovan, Nea Sanders and Jasmine Franklin in the 4x100. The relay ran a season's best time of 44.88 to place eighth and pick up a point for SMU. This was the third-fastest time in program history.

The meet was interrupted by a long weather delay, but the Mustangs came off the delay ready and fired up. In the first event back, SMU history was made.

Nea Sanders ran an outstanding race to cross the finish line first in the 100-meter hurdles, running 13.04. In doing so, the senior became the first SMU female athlete to be crowned an ACC Champion.

"I'm still so excited with the result," Sander said. "I can't believe that happened, but it was definitely earned. I thank God for carrying me safely through the race and for everyone who has supported me to get to this moment."

The energy continued into the next race where Kirin Chacchia competed in the 400-meter hurdles — picking up her own her hurdle medal. Chacchia placed third with a new personal best time of 56.75, lowering her school record.

"It was such an amazing day," Chacchia said. "I'm so proud of myself for executing my race, running a PB and making it onto the podium in such a competitive conference. I am so blessed to be in the position I am, and I couldn't be more grateful for this team."

At the same time on the runway, Hedda Kvalvag had a massive jump in the triple jump finals of 13.03 meters — a new personal best. She earned All-ACC Second Team honors with a fourth place finish. Kvalvag now sits sixth in SMU history.

"I'm beyond proud of myself and the team," Kavlvag said. "We did it when it mattered the most and meant the most!"

Rose Mburu ran her best time yet in the 5,000. Running a strong race, she came away with a time of 16:30.17.

An exciting day ended with a competitive 4x400. The relay made up of Magnolia Crissup, Donovan, Macey Hilton and Chacchia ran a time of 3:38.00 to place sixth and earn All-ACC Second Team honors, picking up points for the Mustangs in the process.

"This team stopped worrying about projections and started competing with belief, toughness, and purpose," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "We created opportunities this season. Our seniors led with confidence and determination and put up serious points for the team."

SMU scored a total of 30 points — more than doubling last season's ACC Championship total, which was 13. The team placed 13th overall.

The Mustangs will continue their season at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville for a chance to compete at nationals. The meet will be held May 27-30.
