DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- The Mustangs had a historic weekend at home hosting the SMU Invitational. New records were set, personal bests were achieved, and new qualifications were obtained for the ACC Championship.
The action began on Friday with a great day for SMU in the long jump. Cleo Martin-Evans placed second in the meet with a jump of 6.29 meters. Senior Hedda Kvalvag jumped 5.97 -- a new personal best – and placed fourth. She moved into eighth in SMU history. Freshman Lily Muzzy also had her best performance yet with 5.89 meters for fifth -- a jump that matches the conference standard. Renee Finke had a personal best of 5.51 meters.
On Saturday, the Mustangs began an exciting day of track and field with a season's best on the 4x100. Sutton, Martin-Evans, Nea Sanders and Jasmine Franklin ran a time of 45.60 -- ninth in program history.
In the 1,500, every racing Mustang saw a personal best time. Elizabeth Smits ran her best time of 4:25.63 and placed fourth in the field. Carolina Correia ran 4:27.63, and Ruby Little ran 4:32.59. Rose Mburu won her heat with a time of 4:32.83. Paulina Kicilinska ran 4:40.66. Erika Kirk won her heat with 4:40.75.
Nea Sanders broke her own meet record that she set last year, winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.45. Renee Finke ran the tenth fastest time in SMU history with 14.33.
Freshman Haylie Donovan ran a lightning-fast time of 54.04 for a new personal best in the 400 and the fourth-fastest time in program history. Donovan achieved the ACC standard with her new time. Magnolia Crissup also had a great day, running 54.86 for a new PB.
Kirin Chacchia was crowned the meet record holder in the 400-meter hurdles with her winning time of 57.79.
In the 800, Macey Hilton shattered her meet record she set last year. She ran a new personal best time of 2:03.90 -- second fastest in SMU history, 12th in the ACC and 52nd in the NCAA.
Mustangs went one and two in the triple jump with Kvalvag winning the event with a season's best jump of 12.73 meters. This moves her into 14th in the ACC. Freshman Lily Muzzy placed second with 12.60 meters.
The meet concluded with the fastest 4x400 of the season. The relay made up of Crissup, Donovan, Hilton and Chacchia ran 3:37.03 to win the race and break their meet record set last year by over five seconds. This is the second-fastest time in SMU history.
The Mustangs will now enter the championship season with the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning on May 14th.
